The modern classroom is often packed with technology \u2013 smart boards, interactive projectors, laptops and tablets, robotics kits etc.\u00a0 If you are not seeing the desired outcomes, then you may need to consider your IT plan. The range of technology tools and resources available to schools can seem overwhelming, and the difficulty is knowing where to start.<\/p>\n
There are important considerations- what device to purchase, what ratio should be looked at. How will we upskill our teachers? What do we want our students to be able to do? What learning opportunities do we want to provide? Careful consideration must be given to the schools IT strategic plan. Research by Mishra and Koehler (2006), suggests that because teachers lack the necessary technological, content and pedagogical knowledge the use of IT may be ineffective or inappropriate.\u00a0 In other words, the technology is not being used effectively to improve the learning opportunities and engage and extend students. The technology investment is significant and there needs to be \u2018bang for buck\u2019 both in terms of the resources purchased and the outcomes available. Technology in the classroom must be more than an add on, its use needs to be integrated to improve and enhance the learning opportunities and outcomes.
